A Special Summer Ahead for The Choir School at St. Peter’s

There is much excitement in the Choir School as we look toward the summer months. Each year, the Choir School travels together on a domestic tour. This year, that tour will take us through Tennessee, with stops in Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Sewanee. We will sing concerts at Ascension Episcopal in Knoxville and Good Shepherd, Lookout Mountain. On Sunday morning, we will serve as the choir for Eucharist at St. Martin of Tours in Chattanooga. From there we will travel to Sewanee, where we will end the day by singing Evensong at All Saints Chapel.

We also have fun, non-singing activities planned for tour this year. We will visit the Museum of Appalachia on our way to Knoxville, the Tennessee Aquarium while we are in Chattanooga, and we will end our tour with a trip to Lake Winnepesaukah Amusement Park before we head back to Charlotte on Monday, June 17.

2019 is an especially important year in the life of the Choir School because it is also an England year. Every four years, the MasterSingers have the opportunity to serve as the choir-in-residence at a Cathedral in England. This trip serves as the culmination of the Choir School experience and is always an extraordinary experience for our choristers.

Our residency this summer will be at Durham Cathedral. We will arrive in Manchester, England on Friday, July 19 and spend a couple of days sight-seeing (and recovering from jet-lag!) in York. On Sunday, we will make our way to Durham, where we will spend the remainder of the trip. The MasterSingers will sing for all choral services throughout the week, including daily Evensongs and Matins and Eucharist on Sunday morning. The amount of music that is needed for the week can feel rather daunting, but the MasterSingers have been working diligently throughout the year so that we can arrive confident and ready to sing.

Back at home, we will have our annual choir camp for our Town and Tour Choirs here at St. Peter’s. Camp runs from Monday, August 5 to Friday, August 9 and is an opportunity to bring new choristers into the program and start learning repertoire for the fall. The MasterSingers will begin their new program year with our retreat at Valle Crucis, August 16 – 18.

We are actively recruiting and auditioning new choristers for the 2019-2020 season. If you are interested in learning more about the Choir School, please contact me or Garrett Law for more information.
