Weekday Morning Prayer and Tuesday Noon Eucharist. Monday–Friday, 8:00–8:30 a.m. Morning Prayer in the Chapel of the Saints is a beautiful offering for the start of the day. On Tuesdays at Noon, we offer a 30-minute celebration of the Holy Eucharist in the Chapel. All are invited and encouraged to bring guests to any and all of these weekday offerings.
Sunday Formation for Youth and Children, weekly. Journey to Adulthood (J2A) youth, ages 13–18, meet in the Youth Suite (basement level, Parish House). Catechesis of the Good Shepherd children, ages 2–12, meet on first floor in the Toddler Atrium and Levels 1–3 Atria (classrooms). 9:30–10:30 a.m. in the Parish House. Sunday Formation for Adults, February 19, 9:30–10:30 a.m. The Parish Hall Forum (second floor, Parish House) will feature “Spiritual Discernment: Where God is in our daily lives,” hosted by parishioner/spiritual director Jim Dudley and the Parish Clergy. This is the first of a two-week series. The assembly will discuss how and where God is present in our lives; explore pertinent scripture passages; look more closely at our own lives; and consider some of the obstacles to seeing God. On February 26, the discussion will continue with discerning God in our lives, and explore how our prayer life can help us with discernment.
What is “Taizé” at St. Peter’s? Taizé is a monthly Sunday evening liturgy modeled after the practice of an ecumenical, international community in Taizé, France. The community, founded in 1940 and run by monastic brothers, is a place where lay and ordained pilgrims go year-round for worship, retreat, and spiritual renewal. At St. Peter’s, you’ll experience a participatory prayer service that combines the music of the Taizé community and periods of silence to help achieve a contemplative state. The altars, sanctuary, chancel, and nave at St. Peter’s are adorned with icons and candles, and overhead lighting is reduced significantly; worshippers are invited to light prayer candles and share in songs such as “Adoramus te, o Christe” (listen online) before receiving the Sacrament. If you are interested in this alternative worship experience, parishioners including Tina Coelho, Michael Pawlyk, Elizabeth Richardson, Callina Satterfield, Gene Sloan, and the Clergy invite you to attend or to ask questions. Explore the Taizé community on the web and bring a guest on the next third Sunday night, February 19.
Sunday Evenings at St. Peter’s: Evensong and Taizé. All are invited to experience alternative contemplative ways to begin the week: worship on most Sundays at 5:00 p.m. On most second and fourth Sundays, Choral Evensong and Holy Eucharist is offered. On every third Sunday, a meditative Taizé Holy Eucharist is offered, which includes music for piano. Our next Taizé liturgy will be February 19, and the next Evensong will be February 26, led by The Reverend Jacob E. Pierce and The Men of St. Peter’s Choir which will include The Reverend Ollie V. Our Witness to the World: Inspiration from the Saints. The Church has always celebrated how the Spirit of Christ has been revealed in the lives of Holy Women and Holy Men. Through the body of Christ, we are joined to them in our worship and in our daily lives. Senior Class Third Tuesday Luncheon, February 21. The February luncheon will be at Carolina Prime Steakhouse (225 E. Woodlawn Avenue) at 11:30 a.m. on February 21. The St. Peter’s Senior Class is a group of members and friends of St. Peter’s (55+) who meet monthly for an informal lunch and twice a year for a party. The Choir School Serenade Gala is Saturday, February 25, 6:30 p.m. It’s Motown plus the MasterSingers at the Charlotte City Club in Uptown Charlotte. Join the fun for an evening of food, great company, and outstanding performances to benefit the Choir School at St. Peter’s. Annual Shrove Tuesday Festival and Volunteers, February 28. On the eve of Ash Wednesday, the parish family is invited to gather for a Shrove Tuesday Festival on Tuesday, February 28, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Prepare now for an evening of live music and food, including pancakes, The Rector’s Gumbo, fresh fruit, King Cake and other desserts, including many child-friendly options. Tickets are $6 for youth and adults, $4 for children, up to a $25 household maximum. RSVP online. A variety of volunteers are essential to another successful event. George Winston Concert Benefits Galilee Ministries. On Thursday, March 23 at 8:00 p.m., pianist George Winston will play a benefit concert at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Davidson. Since 1972, Winston has released 13 solo piano albums. His third concert at St. Alban’s benefits both the St. Alban’s Preschool Scholarship Fund and Galilee Ministries of East Charlotte. Tickets are $50 for general admission and $100 for VIP, which includes priority seating and an intermission reception with beer, wine, and appetizers. You may purchase tickets in the lobby. Women’s Eastertide Retreat with St. Martin’s Charlotte, April 21–23. All women of St. Peter’s are invited to attend “Seek Peace and Pursue it,” an Eastertide retreat in collaboration with St. Martin’s Charlotte, at Valle Crucis Episcopal Conference Center in Western North Carolina. Parish Community Monthly Potlucks: Great First Success! On Sunday, February 12, more than 75 adults, youth, and children gathered at small tables for our first 2017 monthly Parish Potluck at 12:15 p.m. in the Community Room and Parish Hall (second floor, Parish House). Created to foster better community on the most convenient day for our urban parish church, all are invited to share in these “no pressure” meals. Each month, on the second Sunday of the month, a different parish ministry group or team will sponsor and organize the event. The next gathering will be Sunday, March 12 for which we are seeking a host. This is a great opportunity for your group or ministry team to share its story with the wider parish, and smaller groups can pair up. Hosts are responsible for setup/cleanup, and providing basic potluck entrees. How the potlucks work: If your name begins with the letter A-M, bring something savory; if it begins with the letter N-Z, bring something sweet. Parish and Diocesan News
Parish Ministry Areas Overview. During the January 14 Vestry Retreat, the Wardens, Vestry, Treasurer, and Clergy reflected on who will serve as Coordinators for our several ministry areas and partner with their respective ministry area teams. To learn about a particular area and get involved, visit ministry areas at www.st-peters.org or pick up a “Parish Ministry Areas Overview” in the Parish House lobby. Consider how you might share in the mission, ministry, and vision of St. Peter’s in 2017.
Immigration Awareness Tables at St. Peter’s. On Sundays, February 19 and 26, members of the parish Social Justice Team will be present at an information table in the Parish House to provide faith-based insight to immigration matters. Resources from the Episcopal Church Office of Government Relations located on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. will be available.
A Lenten Letter from Bishop Anne Hodges-Copple. Our Bishop Pro Tempore has penned a letter for the St. Peter’s parish community and everyone in the Diocese of North Carolina. It is available online and copies are available in the Parish House lobby. Important pieces of the letter direct readers to pages called “Take Action for Refugees”and “Equipping the Saints.” The Clergy and Social Justice Team encourage familiarization with these resources for our mission and ministry.
Weekday Volunteer Receptionists Needed. Parish Administrator Leigh Dixon is recruiting additional volunteers to serve as daytime Parish House receptionist on a weekly basis. Duties include welcoming guests, answering phone calls, accepting package deliveries, and occasional administrative tasks. In addition to regular weekly shifts, volunteers may serve as substitutes on occasions when a receptionist may need to be away. Casserole Ministry Volunteers. On behalf of St. Peter’s Pastoral Care Team, cooks are being recruited to prepare meals for sharing with fellow parishioners in times of need. If you are interested in serving through this ministry, contact coordinator Pat Markel (email@example.com, 704-582-3148).
Chronic Care Support Group. The next gathering of this group, which meets on the first Friday of each month, will be Friday, March 3 at 11:00 a.m. in the Parlor. Assisting Priest, the Reverend Keith Lane, and others facilitate this monthly meeting of those with chronic illness and caregivers alike. Name Tags at St. Peter’s: An Invitation from Congregational Development. The Clergy and Vestry encourage everyone to consider wearing a name tag button when at St. Peter’s. Name tag buttons are a way of demonstrating what a radically welcoming congregation St. Peter’s is: knowing someone’s name also invites conversation. To request a free button, sign up at the receptionist desk in the Parish House on the main floor and pick it up the following Sunday at or near the reception desk. Founded in 1987, Mecklenburg Ministries (MeckMin) is an interfaith, interracial, and multi-ethnic organization that seeks to build bridges across differences by engaging clergy, encouraging congregations and energizing the community through the inspiration of our shared faith traditions. Sunday, March 26: At 12:30 p.m., the St. Peter’s Choir will host a Gourmet Gospel Brunch Fundraiser for their August 2017 pilgrimage to England where our choristers will serve as choir in residence at St. Alban’s Cathedral. Tickets will go on sale next week. Food will be catered by St. Peter’s Choir Provisions and entertainment will include the choir, guest gospel artists and you, the audience!
2017 Annual Fund Update
2017 Annual Fund Update. Getting Closer: As of Monday, February 13, 333 pledges totaling $890,800 have been received toward our $975,000 goal. The Annual Fund Leadership and Vestry are grateful for each pledge received and prayerfully seek a 100% investment in life at St. Peter’s from all members and newcomers. The Vestry adopted a 2017 budget at its January meeting based on pledges received and limited secondary income sources and hopes for more pledges in order to hire a part-time Communications Administrator and address certain ministry/program and property needs.
